What is Evolution?
Evolution is the grand story of our place in the universe, connecting us to every living thing and replacing ancient myths with a factual account of our beginnings. Charles Darwin saw this not as a cold reality, but as a view of life filled with grandeur. We are part of a splendid panoply of life that has been evolving for eons. At its heart is natural selection, a mechanism of staggering simplicity that explains how a single replicating molecule could eventually produce the immense variety of life we see today. From the wing of a bat to the tail of a peacock, every complex structure is the result of tiny, useful changes accumulated over millions of years.
Despite overwhelming evidence from genetics and new fossil discoveries, evolution remains controversial. Many people feel that being the product of blind natural forces strips away human purpose, a resistance often rooted in religious tradition. In some nations, the public is more likely to accept ancient myths than the reality of our shared ancestry with primates. However, modern science has only strengthened the case for evolution. We have found fish with limbs and dinosaurs with feathers, proving that species are constantly changing. Understanding these connections does not rob life of meaning; instead, it reveals our deep bond with the natural world and ennobles our existence as part of the tree of life.
