The Five Levels of Leadership Influence
Leadership is often misunderstood as a title or a destination, but it is a dynamic process of influence that must be intentionally cultivated. Many people stall in their growth because they believe leaders are born with fixed abilities or that seniority confers authority. In reality, leadership is available to anyone willing to invest in the people around them. The ability to obtain followers rises and falls on the strength of one's influence, which grows through five distinct levels.
The journey begins at the *Position* level, the entry point where people follow you because they have to, based on your job description. While this provides a starting point, it is the weakest form of leadership and often leads to a "boss" mentality that drives workers rather than coaching them. To move beyond this, a leader must shift their focus from their rights to the needs of their team.
The second level is *Permission*, which is rooted entirely in relationships. At this level, people follow you because they want to. You begin to lead with the heart, making personal connections and earning trust by valuing individuals over rules. This creates a more positive environment and raises energy levels. However, staying here too long without achieving results can lead to restlessness.
True momentum occurs at the *Production* level, where influence is built through results. People follow you because of what you have done for the organization. When a leader models productivity and helps the team win, morale skyrockets, problems become easier to solve, and "the Big Mo"—momentum—is created. This stage combines the power of liking each other with the satisfaction of getting things done.
The most transformative level is *People Development*. Great leaders are not defined by their power but by their ability to empower others. At this level, you invest your time in helping individuals reach their personal potential. This creates a multiplying effect: as you develop new leaders, the organization’s capacity grows exponentially. People become loyal to you not just for what you did for the company, but for how you personally changed their lives.
The final level is the *Pinnacle*, a rare stage based on a lifetime of proven excellence and reputation. Leaders at this stage have influence that extends beyond their own organizations and fields. While this level cannot be manufactured—respect must be freely given—it serves as the ultimate goal. By consistently and intentionally navigating these levels, you ensure that your leadership leaves a lasting mark.
